Big Facts on Microneedling

This week at Lewisville Laser & Aesthetics, we’re offering some amazing deals on our microneedling procedures. That got us to thinking – do our patients know exactly what microneedling is, and why we love it? If this is a treatment you’re unfamiliar with, read on to see why all of us at LLA think microneedling is a terrific choice for addressing fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture issues, and acne scarring.

By definition, microneedling is a procedure that utilizes a hand-held, pen-like device equipped with multiple tiny sterile needles at the tip. Your physician or aethestician will apply a topical numbing solution to the skin, and when numbing is complete (that usually takes about 20 minutes), the pen is passed over the surface of the skin. The needles rapidly move up and down, creating tiny micro-channels in the skin. It sounds a bit scary, but the small diameter of the needle, the uniformity of the path of the pen, and the sterile environment are actually stimulating a deep healing response. It’s important to note that at-home treatments and dermarollers can’t provide the efficacy or the sterility of our in-office microneedling procedure.

That deep healing begins with those micro-channels. Collagen and elastin below the epidermis (the visible layer of the skin) get a wake-up call from those tiny needles, and begin an amazing process of tightening and rejuvenating skin from within. This process is aided by the introduction of topical hyaluronic acid (HA) during the microneedling procedure. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring large sugar molecule in your body that has an incredible capacity to bind and hold water. It helps keep your joints well-cushioned and your skin plump and smooth (among many other things). As we age, HA production in the body begins to slow, leaving behind dryness and fine lines. The microneedling procedure allows HA to penetrate deeply into the skin, helping to re-hydrate and invigorate skin at the cellular level.

Another way to increase the rejuvenating impact of a microneedling treatment is by introducing PRP, or platelet-rich plasma. PRP is a serum of sorts, made from your body’s own blood plasma concentrated with your own platelets. Dr. Summer draws a small amount of your blood and spins in it a centrifuge, extracting the powerful, wound-healing platelets. Platelets are key factors in tissue repair and are vital in cell growth and healing. Your tailored PRP is mixed with hydrating hyaluronic acid and applied to the skin after the microneedling procedure to supercharge the benefits to the skin.

Call us today to set up your microneedling appointment, and take advantage of this week’s special savings. And remember, if you have questions about this or any other procedure, cosmetic consultations are always free at Lewisville Laser & Aesthetics!
